What a Week!

Reader's Workshop...

We discussed character traits and thought of character traits for Shelia Rae in the story Shelia Rae the Brave.   The students were very impressed with my drawing. Then students were asked to read through their own books and look for character traits for some of the characters in their own books.  Finally, the students were asked to write some character traits about themselves.  Look at some of the great examples below...

We also learned about the setting of a story... where and when a story takes place. We sang a fun song about setting- ask your child to sing it for you.

Keshav's setting in his book was shopping at the store.

Juliette's setting in her book was in the snow outside.

Language Arts...

We began learning about verbs.  The students had a great time acting out some action words.  The students were asked to write 3 examples of verbs and then draw them in detail.  The students came up with some amazing examples.  Just ask your child to tell you some of the verbs we brainstormed.

Sharon wote play and read

Jaidon wote swimming, jumping and throwing

Math Centers...

The students were introduced to the calculators and had fun exploring.

The students also sorted money into different catergories such as pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

The students played "rolling for 50" and practiced using a number grid.

Wiggle Breaks...

A fun time for all to let loose and wiggle...smiles for everyone!!!

Springdale Sprint...
We won the trophy for first grade since we raised the most money!! Yahoo!!!!!! A big thank you to all the families who donated or raised money for our school.  Our trophy stands tall in our classroom for all to see.  Come check it out!!

A big thank you to all the parents who purchased a book from the Book Fair and donated a book to our class library.

Hope everyone had a great long weekend!

A Full Week of Learning!

Science...
The students enjoyed learning about air and parachutes.  They learned about air resistance and had fun making and flying their own parachutes. Ask your child how to make one and maybe you can try it together at home!

Reading...
The students made retelling ropes and used them to retell the story, Shelia Rae the Brave.  You can see them working hard with their partners to retell the story while discussing the characters, setting, problem and solution in the story.

Emily and Michelle are looking over their retelling ropes!

Gina and Pavla are using the retelling rope to help them as they discuss the story!

Math...
The students have been practicing how to work during math centers.  In the centers they worked with a partner to play the game "Rolling for 50".  The students had a lot of fun practicing how to count  on a number grid.

Travis and Danna are math partners and trying to see who gets to 50 first!

Wiggle Break...
A favorite part of our day... just look below as their faces say it all!

A very special thank you to all the parents who attended Open House!  I had a great turn out and appreciate all your support in the classroom as well as at home!
