A Short Week, but a Busy Week!

Science...

We have begun our Science Unit on Air and Weather... ask your child to tell you all about the fun activities we have been doing to learn about air and air and water.  Below are some great pictures of the students really getting involved with Science!

Writer's Workshop...

We are continuing to write about different "seed" ideas and the students have been learning about COPS! The students know the "COPS" will be called if their writing does not show

  • Capitalization
  • Organization
  • Punctuation
  • Spelling

Reading...

The students are learning about "just write" books.  We discussed how a book should not be too easy or too hard but, just right, as I referrred to the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Math...

The students took their first Unit 1 Math Test last week... I will be discussing the results at the report card conferences or by phone is skills should be practiced at home.

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and this beautiful weather...  Happy New Year to those families who celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Mrs. Matturro

A Wild Wednesday and A Terrific Thursday!

Wednesday we learned about Marshmallow Voices...

We brainstormed what we noticed about a marshmallow using our 5 senses.  The students came up with great answers... Marshmallows are white, round and small, they smell sugary and sweet, they feel mushy, squishy and sticky and they make a soft quiet sound when we drop them.   I used a marshmallow to explain to the students we need to use marshmallow voices when we work and talk in class.  Ask your child to tell you what it means when I say we use marshmallow voices and marshmallow feet in the classroom!  We used the last sense of taste to eat the yummy marshmallow!

Writer's Workshop...

The students wrote down some writing topics which I refer to as "seed ideas".  We discussed how seeds need soil, sun and water in order to grow. Just like seeds, their "seed ideas" will start to grow over time. They will see them grow and change as they write and edit their stories eventually they will end up with "full grown" stories.

Brendan is sharing his list of seed ideas!

Cameron is sharing his list of seed ideas too!

Thursday was a terrific day!
The students loved the wiggle break today... they all danced their wiggles out. Take a look at their faces they had a blast!

Writer's Workshop we learned how to partner read and the students were assigned their reading partner for the year.  They were so engaged in their books... just take a look!

Math homework was assigned tonight... the students were asked to count by 2, 5 or 10's

Can't believe tomorrow is Friday already!

A Busy Rainy Tuesday!

In Writer's Workshop we wrote about a favorite memory.  Below is just a sampling of some great student work.

Keeshav's favorite memory was when he was in preschool he learned to cut.

Ava's favorite memory was when she went to Florida and she saw flamingos.

Javari's favorite memory was when he learned how to do tricks on his skateboard.

Here is a picture of everyone sharing their favorite memories.

We took a wiggle break and danced to Despicable Me.  The students had fun and they are very talented dancers!

Tonight's homework was to fill in the missing vowels.  Please review and practice your short vowel sounds at home.

Thank you to all the parents who sent back the Student Regristration and Internet Permission slip.  I will only post pictures of the students who returned the signed internet slips allowing for their child's pictures to be posted.

Have a great night!

A Very Busy Monday

Today was a very busy day... we went to the computer lab for the first time this morning and started working on our typing skills on a program called "Type to Learn".

We also took a wiggle break and played a fun game called "Hickety Pickety Bumble Bee" we tapped out how many syllables were in each of the students names and then we added all the students names to the word wall.  Ask your child to sing it for you.

We spent some time reading independently in our seats this afternoon.  Please take a look at some of the amazing readers I have in room 10!

Tonight's homework was to complete the letter "Dd" handwriting sheet. Every Monday night for the next month or so I will send home some kind of handwriting sheet.  The students will practice how to write and form their letters in school as well as at home.  They will also be practicing how to use the lines on the paper correctly too.  Please remind your child to always start at the top solid line and pull down to the bottom solid line when writing their uppercase letters.

Thanks for your support! :)

The First Week of School

We spent a lot of time discussing the 4 school rules during the first week of school. Please ask your child to tell you about the 4 school rules.

1. Work hard
2. Be responsible
3. Be respectful
4. Be safe

Homework last week was all about the 4 school rules.  The students did a great job writing about how to work hard, be responsible, be respectful and to be safe at school!
